Dr. Gans Performs Area's 1st Canaloplasty Procedures for Glaucoma
Dr. Lawrence Gans, Medical Director of SureVision Eye Centers, performed the first Canaloplasty procedures in the St. Louis area on July 31, 2008. This revolutionary procedure is a non-penetrating treatment for Open Angle Glaucoma. Canaloplasty offers an effective alternative to Trabeculectomy surgery where a new drainage channel is created to lower the eye pressure. This new technique uses the normal drainage channel but just uses a special suture to stretch open the filtering meshwork in the eye that allows the fluid to enter the drainage channel more easily to lower the pressure and treat glaucoma. Dr. Gans has been a pioneer in surgery on this trabecular meshwork for over 20 years since performing the world's first human transplant of this tissue and receiving a grant from the National Institute of Health to investigate this procedure.
